Worst Episode Ever (A Simpsons Podcast)

It's the 2nd annual drunken New Year's episode at WEE Studios where Jack, Dan and special guest Geoff Wolyniec watch Season 14's Old Yeller Belly, a post-classic episode cobbled together from storylines of several classic ones. Has any show gotten more mileage from 60s Batman than The Simpsons? What's the laziest possible name? Is Jack's rug evolving? All that plus no biscuits, Hitler mailmen, iPad Nan-Moes, Dan throws out the baby, The Gwynne & Hepburn Podcast, and a game of Which Episode Is Real? And last but certainly not least, WEE Studios makes a special announcement about 2016 (and kills off the character you hated the most...). Happy New Year!

In this WEE episode with too many beats, Dan & Jack cover a Simpsons episode with too many beats—season 15’s Co-Dependent’s Day. This much-reviled storyline features Homer framing Marge for his DUI and an entire act devoted to Cosmic Wars. WEE were this close to naming this week’s episode “A Crappy Nail in a Shitty Piece of Wood,” so you know it’s going to be a good one. Is this Homer’s lowest point ever? Do Jack & Dan record every episode upside-down? Who starred in the short-lived revival Laugh Command ’89? The Simpsons go to Africa this week while Jack & Dan stay put in WEE Studios with returning special guest Nick Noga. Season 12’s Simpson Safari, one of our most requested episodes (even Mike Reiss hates it) has a bag-boy strike (they happen!) twist and tweak itself into monkey and diamond-related hijinks with many of Africa’s famous landmarks and tragic quagmires used for comic fodder. Will Nick point out WEE’s flawed ranking system and ever-increasing disconnect with actual Simpsons commentary? Does John Swartzwelder save the episode with a strong first act? Can Jack effectively capture the typical episode-summarizing blurb Dan usually writes for each new podcast, or will he succumb to his natural tendency to use too many clauses and run-on sentences until everyone has finally given up on whatever he was trying to say? In their honor, WEE watch Season 20's Father Knows Worst, a story about helicopter dads, brokeback jugglers and weirdly intricate scene transitions. Can the show get so cartoony in an otherwise realistic plot? And was Charles really in charge or was he just some weird drifter? Groophic and the Ghost

Some BODY once told us that Season 11's Behind the Laughter would be a great episode for Worst Episode Ever... so we watched it! Yes this extended parody of VH1's "Behind the Music" first aired 15 years ago (and slightly more than 15 years since Dan & Jack went to go see the Norm MacDonald bomb Screwed). It's basically a mockumentary looking at an alternate reality Simpsons family, and it's one of the least confusing things going on in today's episode. Would this have worked as a series finale for "The Simpsons?" Do people today even remember "Behind the Music?" (Does it matter for enjoying this episode?) And was this a record for how quickly the show fell apart? Plus, Groophic makes a new friend, the ghost of a child that Jack murdered who may or may not be real.

How great is it to see a childlike non-jerk Homer just play with a dog? And what is the antithesis of hypnotism? All that, and bee plots, super soaker drones, what waters Jack's mouth and when it's time to go to war.

Special guest Josh Kurp from uproxx.com makes Jack and Dan watch Season 23's The Book Job, a satirical take on the publishing industry that doubles as Neil Gaiman's comedy debut and an "Ocean's 11" parody. Lisa uncovers a sinister plot behind young adult novels that leads Homer and Bart to write their own. Doesn't sound like comedy gold, but maybe comedy bronze? What's the line between art and commercialism on The Simpsons? Why did we laugh at jokes we didn't even like? And is there a parallel universe where The Simpsons ended after Season 9? (And what are the us-es of that universe podcasting about?) This was our most requested episode, but is it as good as those Brian Setzer Orchestra parody films? Our answer may surprise you...

Release the robotic Richard Simmons! Another extra minisode of outtakes from Episode 16, talking about "Large Marge." Brice tells a Tom Selleck anecdote, Jack struggles to make metaphors, and Dan thinks a joke is just... *fart.* New full episode coming Wednesday!

Things get heavy as WEE, and returning guest Brice Canedo-Pullan, discuss Season 14's problematic "Large Marge". Marge accidentally gets breast implants, the citizens of Springfield sing a song about how they make her better, and lazy gay jokes get made in a muddled episode that makes no larger social commentary and has no moral. Remember, this show tackled homosexuality in a thoughtful progressive episode just six years prior! We weigh the heavy issues of sexism, feminism, and body shaming as three white heterosexual men (and we welcome listener input on it, male, female, or otherwise). Plus, Batman! Who is the worst Jack ever? Who will literally blush themselves to death? And who left the milk out?

NEXT WEEK: Because you demanded it... "The Man Who Came to Be Dinner"!

If that's what they cut out, what they leave in must be pure gold! A mini extra of outtakes from Episode 15, stitched together for your enjoyment. If you like it, we'll do more bonus episodes. If you hate it, let's never speak of it again. Either way, this probably should have remained cut but, oh well! New full episode still coming on Wednesday!

Everyone's favorite tertiary school official gets his moment in the spotlight in Season 23's "Bart Stops to Smell the Roosevelts," Super Duper Intendent Chalmers. Can Chalmers succeed where a string of teachers, parents, and parental figures failed by making Bart love learning? Or will Bart just turn into a terrorist? (Or both?) Dan and Jack are joined by special guest Brice Canedo-Pullan, assistant editor of the CBS show "Blue Bloods," who helps suss out this episode's strange pacing issues, dig into these guest animator couch sequences the HD era is so fond of, and analyze jokes about operating systems. Why does the news have a children's drawing of Bart's death by hanging? Why are we deprived of a long-winded Grampa story? And what's the deal with lateness fees, guys? Also, this episode features Nelson's mother, have we seen her before? All this, plus Jack can't say "anthropomorphic," Dan makes a terrible beets pun, and deep conversation about the opening credits to "Boy Meets World."

It's the cold, dark, depressing month of January, a perfect time for Season 17's "Bonfire of the Manatees." Didn't this episode open with a St. Patrick's Day parade? No? It actually opens with Homer shooting a porno? And it gets worse from there...? Well. This should be a fun one. Join us, with Alec Baldwin as a manatee enthusiast, as we dig deep into the excessive violence in this episode, debate what makes a good couch gag, and question why an episode so clearly focused on Marge is really all about Homer. Why is this episode's plot a Voltron-like combination of lesser plots? Why is Homer so over-the-top unlikeable here? And what other episodes did this episode's writer pen? (The answer MAY shock you, much like a car cigarette lighter). All that, plus, hard-hitting philosophical questions about manatees, more loose analogies to Spider-Man, and our new show sponsor: Vlassic pickles (not really).

What better way to break in the new year than panda-on-man sexual assault? Yes, WEE've sobered up since New Years, and are ready for Season 12's "Homer Vs. Dignity," one of our most requested episodes. Homer needs money, Mr. Burns hires him as his "prank monkey," and nothing is resolved in an episode that just kind of ends. Maybe we do need another drink... We debate the existence/goodness of Lindsay Naegle, illuminate the weird sexual undercurrent in the episode, and discuss Mr. Burns' misunderstanding of what a prank is. When did Moe become so creepy? Why does no one in Springfield mourn the great hobo genocide? And why is a Simpsons podcast in 2015 talking about hit 80s sitcom "Empty Nest?" All that, plus, Jack forgets the planets, Dan nerds out about Spider-Man, and much, much more. (And if anyone from Marvel is out there, we are available to write that "Spider-Man/Vulture: The Empty Nest" limited series...)
